Each workshop in detail
Friday 12 June - 10am to 4.30pm
Outdoor painting by the river near Well House Haven
Our first workshop is a full painting day close to Well House Haven. We will take a short walk across fields down to an exclusive and tranquil spot to set up and paint the lovely gentle flowing river. With dappled sunlight and shade this is a gorgeous location to paint.
Be selective with what you want to use. Remember, this is outdoor terrain and you have to carry your own equipment to site. Wear appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear to paint on site.
There will be a short demonstration from myself using soft pastels to get you started. The emphasis will be on quick and expressive mark making to get you started - whatever media you choose.
We will take a break at lunchtime to return to Well House Haven Saturday for lunch before returning to the location again to finish your paintings in the afternoon.
Bring with you your own packed lunch as lunch isn’t provided. If you want hot drinks on location bring your own flask with you.
In the late afternoon having packed up your things we will walk back to Well House Haven for a final short constructive assessment of everyone’s work as a group before departing at 4.30pm.
If, on the off chance rain is expected, we will paint in the barn studio at Well House Haven instead. Tables, easels and chairs etc are provided along with tea and coffee. You can work from your own photographs or sketches or other reference to paint from. None will be provided. A great day (whatever the weather) to be really creative, free and expressive and push your creative boundaries for an enriched creative experience with like minded artists.
Saturday 13 June - 10am to 4.30pm
Outdoor painting on location at Middlesmoor village in Nidderdale
We will meet together in the main square in the village of Middlesmoor before walking a short distance to our wonderful painting location. This will be behind the main church overlooking a stunning breathtaking view of Nidderdale. A short demonstration from myself will take place after we have set up our things to get you started. I will work with mixed media (watercolour, Gouache and soft pastel) to show you how to combine media in really exciting ways.
Bring with you whatever media you want to paint with - I'm conversant with lots so the tuition you will recieve (whatever your level is) will be tailored to what you bring and what you want to achieve from the day.
We will take a break at lunchtime, roughly about 12.30am. Students may choose to have a pub lunch or eat their own packed lunch they bring with them. Lunch and drinks are not provided.
After lunch we will return to the same painting location to finish our paintings. Students may decide to do another - I will leave that up to you. It's a flexible day. At the end of the workshop there will be an optional short constructive assessment of everyone’s work as a group before departing at 4.30pm.
Sunday 14 June - 10am to 3.00pm
Studio painting day in the barn at Well House Haven, Nidderdale
Meet at Well House Haven 10am sharp to set up in the studio barn before your days studio painting
The emphasis of the exciting studio painting day is to expand your creative horizons using different media (which you bring with you on yopur own different surfaces - paper and pastel paper and so on) in a semi abstract and experimental way. Working large and small and on different pieces of work at the same time you will gain a real insight into how to push creative ideas in new and exciting and creatively enriching ways.
Students must bring with them their own painting references, sketches, photographs and so on to paint from as these are not provided. The same for your art materials. Bring with you what you want to use and experiment with or learn more about.
The studio day is always an eye opener! Techniques learned will help each and every student (regardless of your skill set or level of ability) to return home full of enthusiasm to continue to use the techniques taught to create new and exciting paintings for themselves in the future too. A really great day shared with like minded artists.
Points to note
We will take short walks through different types of terrain - some a little rough and sometimes somewhat steep to paint and draw on Friday so a descent level of fitness is best.
Saturday at Middlesmoor is an easy walk to the painting viewpoint.
For Sunday please be aware - the studio is situated on the first floor. Please bear this in mind when considering booking your art day at Well House Haven on Sunday.
For any painting day - studio or outdoors, please bring your own art equipment and things you want to paint with. This includes brushes, easel and paper. None are provided.
Packed lunch on all days with your own drinks strongly advised (should you not want a pub lunch on Saturday at Middlesmoor that is). However, on Sunday in the studio barn, tea and coffee are provided, food is not.
Artistic ability of students wanting to partake
Artists who have been practicing for a while who are at an intermediate level or have some practice will gain the most from the painting days. Pure beginners will find the painting days a lot to take in.
A good level of fitness is also required to walk some distances over mixed terrain (some rugged) to get to painting locations.
Tuition given to every student will be way beyond the basic because these exciting painting days aim to develop more of an engagement with landscape with ethos, creative intent and practice beyond a litteral approach and are the main focus for your artistic development.
If in doubt about your abilities and suitablility for you on a chosen painting day you wish to book, you can have a chat with me in confidence if you wish on 07522 238822 to see is the day is right for you.
